REVIEW BY W. R. LOGAN

Titan's hardback editions are great packages, better quality paper than usual Titan reprints, hardback covers and black slipcases with silver lettering. These 'Classic Editions' look great on a bookshelf, feel great in your hands and the black and white artwork really stands out on the paper, but no matter how good a book looks ultimately its what's contained within its covers that will make you part with your hard earned cash.

Getting any fan of early 2000AD work to part with their money for this book shouldn't be too hard, but why is this book worth having? Pat Mills at his best has few equals and these stories were written when he was at his best. Kevin O'Neill's artwork is detailed and stunning and in these early tales once O'Neill had put ink on paper it was hard to imagine any other artist being able to portray the world of Nemesis.

Because of the labour intensive work of O'Neill and the popularity of Nemesis it was necessary to get another artist to work on Book Two whilst O'Neill would work on Book Three. That artist was Jesus Redondo and his style was in complete contrast to O'Neill's visuals and up to now Book Two has only been reprinted in 'The Best of 2000AD 43'. Book Two is one of my favourite Nemesis tales and Redondo's work, especially the depiction of the spider jailers of Arachnos, is arguably the best work he ever produced for 2000AD. Its fitting that the first reprint of Book Two is in this 'Classic Edition' as it truly is a Classic story and worthy of being bound along side O'Neill's early Nemesis work.

If you're a fan of Nemesis, Pat Mills or Kevin O'Neill then this book should be on your bookshelf, but it deserves a place also because of Jesus Redondo's work on Book Two, as its hard to believe that this tale hasn't been collected before. Book Two has been overlooked for far too long, but there is no longer any reason why it now shouldn't be read and enjoyed by a wider audience.

La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
