Dredd wins Best Character at National Comics Awards

At last weekend's National Comics Awards dinner in Bristol, Dredd saw off tough competition from the likes of Batman, Spider-Man and Dennis the Menace to win the award for Best Comics Character. Upon being presented with the award, the future lawman said, "Illegal gathering, consumption of banned substances, disruptive behaviour - I make that ten years apiece. Move it, creeps!"

From his iso-cube, 2000 AD editor Matt Smith commented, "Twenty-five years on and the big guy with the bike is still as massively popular as ever. As the comic-reading voters have proven, when it comes to pure entertainment Dredd is a hard act to beat."

Best New Talent award was won by 2000 AD regular Frazer Irving, responsible for the much-praised recent Judge Death strip, as well as Necronauts, Storming Heaven, A Love like Blood and the new Dark Horse series, Fort. While sobbing like Halle Berry, Frazer said, "Being voted best new talent for a second year painted a big smirk of contentment on my face, as it's always nice to be considered 'new' and 'fresh'. Now my goal is to snatch the top award in the 'best artist' category which I came second in this time round...".

The awards also saw wins from 2000 AD alumni including Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Frank Quiteley, and special mention must go to the 2000 AD tribute comic Zarjaz for winning Best Independent Comic.

2000 AD and Rebellion would like to congratulate Dredd creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and Frazer Irving for their respective awards, as well as all the other creators and comics that won on the night.
